  32. Chat With Lisa is Shareware. You may post the UNREGISTERED version for 
  33. downloading or upload it to any other BBS, provided that you do not make 
  34. any changes to the contents of the ZIP file. The REGISTERED version can
  35. NOT be distributed - under penalty of copyright law. The archive and its 
  36. individual contents may not be sold under any conditions.

  38. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
  39. ====================
  40. Chat With Lisa was created so that my callers would always have someone
  41. to chat with. You can run Lisa as a Door, with an opening screen that 
  42. introduces the caller to Lisa. Or you can skip the opening screen and 
  43. pretend to page Lisa. She can be your virtual CoSysop 24 hours per day.
  44.  
  45. Lisa has "artificial intelligence" and will chat with your callers about 
  46. any subject. She is programmed to recognize specific keywords and provide 
  47. appropriate replies. If Lisa doesn't find any keywords, she uses generic 
  48. responses. The Sysop can configure Lisa's rating to be G, R, or X.
  49.  
  50. To help mimic human behavior, Lisa makes random typos and includes the 
  51. caller's name in some of her replies. She even remembers recent callers!
  52. On my BBS, "Chat With Lisa" is on the Main Menu and users can page her. 
  53. Many Sysops enjoy watching Lisa's chat sessions or reading the LOG files. 
  54.  
  55. MAD ABOUT LISA!
  56. ===============
  57. Please note that if you do not display the opening screen, some of your 
  58. callers will think Lisa is a real person. They might also get upset when 
  59. they realize she is just a computer, and not available for dates. <grin>
  60.  
  61. One Sysop created a fake Lisa account and put her e-mail address on the 
  62. Page Menu; now he answers her mail! Other Sysops provide GIFs of Lisa for 
  63. downloading. Don't blame me when your callers find out you tricked them.
  64.  
  65. STANDARD FEATURES:
  66. ==================
  67. * Use any COM port from 1-15, up to 115k baud.
  68. * Support for non-standard IRQ's and multiple nodes.
  69. * Fossil driver support for multi-port boards. 
  70. * Returns to BBS on dropped carrier. 
  71. * Keyboard timeout after 4 minutes inactivity.
  72. * Support for Wildcat and PCBoard % codes.
  73. * Compatible with many BBS drop files.
  74. * Support BBS available.
  75.  
  76. PLAYING LOCALLY:
  77. ================                                 
  78. To try out Lisa, just type LISA LOCAL and press return. The unregistered
  79. program's 15 second delay screens are not displayed during local mode.
  80.  
  81. The LISA.CFG file must be in the same directory as Lisa. Unless you
  82. have already modified the configuration file, you will see the opening
  83. screen and the rating will be set to R. Lisa's typing speed is set 
  84. automatically every time the program starts up.
  85.  
  86. CUSTOM RESPONSE FILE:
  87. =====================
  88. If you would like Lisa to answer questions about your BBS or talk about 
  89. your special interests, please read the CUSTOM.TXT file. 
  90.  
  91. ADULT & NON-ADULT OPTIONS:
  92. ==========================
  93. The Sysop can configure Lisa's rating to be G, R, or X. Lisa will  
  94. behave (or misbehave) based on the following parameters:
  95.  
  96.  * The G-rated Lisa will not make sexual remarks or use profanity. 
  97.    But she might tease the caller or be sarcastic.
  98.  * The R-rated Lisa can be sexy and provocative, but she won't use 
  99.    profanity or engage in cybersex. 
  100.  * The X-rated Lisa will have cybersex and use profanity, but only 
  101.    if the caller persists in talking dirty to her. The "random" hot
  102.    chat scripts will keep your adult callers from getting bored.
  103.  
  104. THE X-RATED SETTING WORKS ON REGISTERED VERSIONS ONLY! THIS MEANS
  105. SYSOPS CAN DISTRIBUTE LISA18.ZIP (UNREGISTERED) WITHOUT RESTRICTIONS.
  106.  
  107. NOTE: THE TELECOMMUNICATIONS ACT OF 1996 MAKES IT A CRIMINAL OFFENSE 
  108. TO KNOWINGLY EXPOSE MINORS TO INDECENT MATERIALS. REGISTERED SYSOPS 
  109. SHOULD NOT ALLOW MINORS (OR PRUDES) TO CHAT WITH THE X-RATED LISA. 
  110.  
  111. LOG FILES:
  112. ==========
  113. With the LOG option turned on, the Lisa program will record the actual
  114. conversation for each chat session. To prevent file sharing errors and
  115. co-mingled conversations, a separate log file is created for each node.
  116. Node 1 will be LISA1.LOG, Node 2 will be LISA2.LOG, etc.
  117.  
  118. The log files are SELF-MAINTAINING. At startup, the program checks the
  119. file size of the current log. If the size is over 64,000 bytes, the file
  120. is deleted and the log starts over. That is potentially 64k for every
  121. node, so 10 nodes might fill up 640k of hard drive space. In practice,
  122. some logs are 1k when others are 63k, so the average is about 32k each.
  123.  
  124. You may read the log files with any ASCII text viewer. While you are
  125. viewing the log, the program can not record any chat sessions for that
  126. node. If you have any problems with the log files, turn them off!
  127.  
  128. CHANGING LISA'S NAME:
  129. =====================
  130. Sysops can specify Lisa's name in the LISA.CFG file. The new name will 
  131. be displayed everywhere that "Lisa" was previously shown. Any female 
  132. name up to 15 characters can be used. Choose carefully - hehe.
  133.  
  134. SETTING LISA'S TYPING SPEED:
  135. ============================
  136. Lisa's typing speed can be specified on line 10 of the LISA.CFG file. 
  137. Entering 0 will set the speed automatically, which we recommend. But you 
  138. can enter 1 to 100 to manually control her typing speed. The speed varies 
  139. by the square of the number (1 is fast, 100 is slow). 
  140.  
  141. Before setting the speed manually, you should check the number that Lisa 
  142. is using for her AUTOMATIC speed setting. Just enter -1 (negative one) on
  143. line 10 to put Lisa in her diagnostic mode. The speed setting will then
  144. be shown on your local monitor, right after the "PAGE SENT TO..." line. 
  145. Use this number as a starting point for your manual speed setting. 
  146.  
  147. The other numbers displayed are: K = Keywords stored, R = Replies stored,
  148. MEM = Memory available while using Lisa, STK = Stack space, STR = String
  149. space. Don't forget to change line 10 back to 0, or your own setting.
  150.  
  151. INSTALLATION:
  152. =============
  153. Installation consists of modifying two files: A batch file that your BBS
  154. calls to run Lisa, and a configuration file that controls the various
  155. options. The program also uses the ANSI.SYS driver that comes with DOS,
  156. so make sure that is installed. Instructions follow:
  157.  
  158. SAMPLE BATCH FILE:
  159. ==================
  160. A sample batch file (LISA.BAT) is included and consists of the following:
  161.  
  162.    ECHO OFF
  163.    CD C:\DOORS\LISA   <--- Change to the door's directory.
  164.    LISA LISA.CFG      <--- Run the door program using config filename.
  165.    CD C:\WILDCAT      <--- Go back to BBS directory when user exits door.
  166.    BBS.BAT            <--- Restart node or BBS. Use ONLY if you terminate
  167.                            instead of shelling before using the door.
  168.  
  169. SEE YOUR INDIVIDUAL BBS DOCUMENTATION FOR INSTRUCTIONS ON RUNNING DOORS!
  170.  
  171. If you need to use a non-standard IRQ, add the IRQ number after LISA.CFG 
  172. in the batch file. For example, to use IRQ 5:
  173.  
  174.    ECHO OFF
  175.    CD C:\DOORS\LISA  
  176.    LISA LISA.CFG /5  <--- Non-standard IRQ callout. Include the "slash" 
  177.    CD C:\WILDCAT 
  178.    
  179. The /5 tells the program to use IRQ 5 instead of the standard IRQ. Or you 
  180. can set the IRQ environment variable (SET IRQ=5) and use it as follows:   
  181.  
  182.    LISA LISA.CFG /%IRQ%  <--- Non-standard IRQ callout. Include the "slash"    
  183.    
  184. Don't forget to place the batch file in the proper directory so that
  185. your BBS can execute it. Usually, the batch file is placed in the BBS
  186. directory or subdirectory, not the Lisa directory.
  187.  
  188. CONFIGURATION:
  189. ==============
  190. You must edit the LISA.CFG file to configure Lisa for your BBS. The Lisa 
  191. program will read only the first 10 lines, and they must be in the order 
  192. specified without any blank lines. The following example of LISA.CFG is 
  193. for all BBS's:  (you should edit the LISA.CFG file already supplied)
  194.  
  195. C:\PCB\PCBOARD.SYS   <---,    The first line should be the full path to
  196. C:\PCB\USERS.SYS         |    your BBS drop file. The Lisa program can
  197. C:\BBS\DOOR.SYS          |    use any drop file shown here. Select the
  198. C:\BBS\USERINFO.DAT      |--- correct one and edit the line to provide
  199. C:\BBS\CALLINFO.BBS      |    the full path. Use only one line here. The
  200. C:\BBS\DORINFOx.DEF      |    second line must be the name of your BBS,
  201. C:\BBS\SFDOORS.DAT       |    as described below.
  202. C:\BBS\TRIBBS.SYS    <---'
  203. ChAoS Online     <--- The name of your BBS.
  204. Mike            <--- First name of the Sysop (not displayed to callers).
  205. Fox            <--- Last name of the Sysop (not displyed to callers).
  206. 9999999       <--- Registration code. Use any number if not registered.
  207.                   Once registered, you cannot change lines 2, 3, or 4.
  208. r           <--- Set rating to "G" or "R" or "X" (don't use quotes).
  209. yes        <--- Display opening screen? "YES" or "NO" (don't use quotes).
  210. 1         <--- Create chat logs? 1 = YES, 0 = NO (must be 1 or 0).
  211. Lisa     <--- Lisa's first name. Use any female name up to 15 characters.
  212.              The program will always capitalize the first letter. 
  213. 0      <--- Lisa's typing speed. Enter 0 to set the speed automatically.
  214.            We recommend using 0, but you can enter 1-100 to manually 
  215.           control her typing speed (1 is fast, 100 is slow). 
  216.  
  217. Remember to press <enter> at the end of each line, including the last
  218. one (don't leave trailing spaces on any line). Also check for spelling
  219. errors and make sure that LISA.CFG is located in the Lisa directory.
  220.  
  221. MULTIPLE NODES:
  222. ===============
  223. When specifying the location of the drop file on line 1 of LISA.CFG,
  224. you may use the environment variables %wcnodeid%, %pcbdrive%, %pcbdir% 
  225. and %pcbnode%. YOU MUST USE JUST ONE CONFIGURATION FILE TO RUN MULTIPLE 
  226. NODES! The configuration filename must be LISA.CFG for proper operation. 
  227. Here are some examples:
  228.  
  229. For Wildcat 4.X software, the first line in LISA.CFG could be:
  230.  
  231.    C:\WILDCAT\WCWORK\NODE%WCNODEID%\DOOR.SYS
  232.  
  233. The WCNODEID environment variable should be SET in the batch file 
  234. that starts each node.
  235.  
  236. For PCBoard software, the first line in LISA.CFG could be:
  237.  
  238.    %PCBDRIVE%%PCBDIR%\NODE%PCBNODE%\USERS.SYS
  239.     or just C:\BBSDIR\NODE%PCBNODE%\USERS.SYS
  240.    
  241. The PCB environment variables must also be SET in the batch file 
  242. that starts the BBS or the batch file for each node. See below:
  243.  
  244.    SET PCBDRIVE=C:      <--- Drive letter of your BBS files.
  245.    SET PCBDIR=\BBSDIR   <--- Path to your BBS files.
  246.    SET PCBNODE=1        <--- Number of the node running Lisa. Since 
  247.                              this could change, you should add it to 
  248.                              the batch file that starts each node.
  249.  
  250. Other BBS systems can use the same variables as Wildcat and PCBoard.
  251. The correct path to the drop file for different nodes could then be
  252. specified in the LISA.CFG file by following the examples shown above.
  253.  
  254. Note: If you DO specify a filename other than LISA.CFG, Lisa will read 
  255. the first line of the specified file to get the path for the drop file, 
  256. and then open LISA.CFG to get all the other settings.
  257.  
  258. DON'T FORGET TO INSTALL SHARE.EXE IN YOUR AUTOEXEC.BAT FILE IF YOU ARE 
  259. RUNNING MULTIPLE NODES!
  260.  
  261. FOSSIL DRIVER SUPPORT:
  262. ======================
  263. DoorFrame supports the use of Fossil drivers. To use the Fossil driver 
  264. instead of the standard COM ports, just add /FD after LISA.CFG in the 
  265. batch file. For example:
  266.  
  267.    ECHO OFF
  268.    CD C:\DOORS\LISA  
  269.    LISA LISA.CFG /FD   <--- Use the Fossil driver! 
  270.    CD C:\WILDCAT 
  271.    
  272. If no Fossil driver is detected, DoorFrame will print a message to that 
  273. effect and then exit the door gracefully.
  274.  
  275. TECHNICAL SUPPORT:
  276. ==================
  277. Almost every problem that you might encounter while installing Lisa has 
  278. been described and solved in the HELP.TXT file. If any internal errors do 
  279. occur, check for a file called DFRAME.ERR and tell me what the error code 
  280. says. But try reading the HELP.TXT file before asking for help.
  281.  
  282. Like all mortals, my time is limited. So please don't leave messages like 
  283. "It doesn't work" or "I get an error". If you want my help, give me the
  284. details, ie: What did the screen display? When did it occur? What error 
  285. code? Which BBS software? Which Operating System? 
  286.  
  287. And if you don't know how to use DOS, or haven't read the instructions,
  288. or can't edit batch files, or don't know how to run your BBS, I will be 
  289. happy to teach you... for $60.00 per hour :)

  305. LOCAL DISPLAY PROBLEMS:
  306. =======================
  307. If you observe strange characters when using the door locally, you 
  308. need to add the following line to your CONFIG.SYS file:
  309.    DEVICE=C:\DOS\ANSI.SYS
  310. Read your DOS manual for more information. If you are multi-tasking
  311. with DesqView, add DVANSI.COM to the batch file for each node.
  312.  
  313. PROBLEMS WITH 486DX COMPUTERS:
  314. ==============================
  315. From the DoorFrame documentation: "The math co-processor in 486DX 
  316. computers cannot handle the floating point math that all Microsoft 
  317. Basics use". If you keep getting "keyboard timeout" errors, or get
  318. ERROR 5 or 6, place the following line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
  319.    SET NO87=ON
  320. This will turn off your math co-processor and allow the door to 
  321. function properly.
  322.  
  323. THREE REASONS TO REGISTER:
  324. ==========================
  325. 1) The unregistered delay screens will go away! 
  326. 2) You can use the CUSTOM.DAT file to have Lisa answer questions about 
  327.    your BBS or talk about your special interests.
  328. 3) You can use the X-rated setting to entertain your adult callers with 
  329.    random Hot Chat scripts. Lisa loves cybersex! (unregistered versions
  330.    will switch to R-rated mode whenever the X-rated setting is used) 
  331. The registration fee is $12 if you register by mail (read REGISTER.TXT)
  332. or only $10 if you register online (read ONLINE.TXT). The fee applies 
  333. to all future versions of Chat With Lisa.
  334.  
  335. FUTURE VERSIONS:
  336. ================
  337. Tell me what you want. Some ideas for future versions include:
  338.    * Group chat that would let you talk to Lisa and her friend.
  339.    * User data file so Lisa could remember previous conversations.
  340. There are no guarantees that these ideas will be incorporated.
  341.
